Penalty points avoided through legal loophole to be applied retrospectively

People who have availed of a penalty points loophole, will have them imposed retrospectively.

It has emerged that thousands of people have avoided having points applied, by simply failing to bring their drivers license to court.

The Transport Minister Paschal Donohue says Gardaí will now prosecute those who do not bring their license to court.

Independent TD Tommy Broughan raised the issue in the Dáil.

He said that the transport and justice departments need to pull together to prevent such problems.

"We have two ministers, and they're sometimes like the out half and one of the backs in rugby, passing the ball and not taking direct action," the Minister said.
