One Sinn Féin councillor has been expelled from the party and another suspended in east Cork after an internal party review.

Councillor Kieran McCarthy has been expelled while Councillor Melissa Mullane has been suspended for 12 months.

Sinn Féin will not say why it has taken the actions and only that the decision was taken by its Ard Chomhairle yesterday.

A number of other party individuals in east Cork are facing disciplinary procedures, it confirmed.

Party TD Jonathan O'Brien chaired the review into the party's organisation in east Cork after it was stood down earlier this year.

The Cork North-Central TD confirmed the disciplinary actions to the Irish Examiner this morning, but said they were subject to appeal.

“I did the review. The Ard Chomhairle accepted the review and findings yesterday and the individuals were informed this morning.”
