Dublin in top 50 most expensive cities for workers

Dublin has moved up two places in the rankings of the most expensive locations for foreign workers in the Eurozone.

Mercer's 21st annual Cost of Living Survey sees the capital now placed at 49th position.

Zurich has once again topped the list as the most costly city in Europe, while Geneva and Bern are also in the top 10. London is placed 12th.

Senior Consultant at Mercer, Noel O'Connor, said Dublin's rise is mostly to do with the cost of renting.

"Dublin was the only city to move up the rankings in the Eurozone," he said. "The cost of housing, which is one of the biggest expenses … plays an important part in determining where cities are ranked."

"The increased costs of renting accommodation in Dublin for expatriates is one of the key factors in Dublin being placed in the top 50."

Dublin rose to 51 place in the rankings last year, though at the height of the boom it reached 16th position.
