The Government has comfortably won the first Dáil vote establishing the IBRC inquiry.

In the past few minutes, TDs voted down a Sinn Féin amendment calling for wider terms of reference by 103 votes to 32.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan confirmed that the inquiry will be chaired by retired High Court judge Daniel O'Keefe, the current chair of the Standards in Public Office Commission.

"Judge O'Keefe has a strong commercial background, he's a qualified chartered accountant, and he's also a former chairman of the Irish Takeover Panel," said Minister Noonan.

"I would like to express my appreciation to Judge O'Keefe for agreeing to serve in this important role."
