The crew of the LE Eithne have rescued more than 400 migrants stranded in the Mediterranean Sea.

A major operation involving all European naval ships in the region is ongoing this evening as officers atttempt to reach 14 migrant vessels that could be drifting on open water.

Those on board the Irish Naval vessel have been involved in a number of rescue operations over the last 24 hours.

It is feared that the lives of thousands of people could be at risk this evening.
