O'Brien welcomes release of redacted judgment

Denis O'Brien has welcomed today's redacted judgment in the High Court.

The judgment set out its reasons for granting an injunction to the businessman and IBRC stopping RTE from broadcasting details of his personal banking affairs.

Some sections that would have been redacted from the judgment two weeks ago are now included because of comments made by Independent TD Catherine Murphy under Dáil privilege.

In a statement this evening Mr O'Brien said in particular he notes Mr Justice Binchy's statement that "the existence of a right to confidentiality between a bank and its customers had been recognised in law for almost a century".

RTE's lawyers are considering today's judgment and may make a further application to the court on Friday.
