Referendums turnout nears 30%

Polling stations are reporting brisk turnout in referendum voting this evening.

The average is around 30% and voting is expected to pick up as people finish work.

Urban areas are seeing higher turnout.

The traditional teatime rush, with people voting after work, should see the turnout at over 60%.

If that's the case, close to two million people will have cast their votes - the highest turnout for any referendum in Irish history.

Polls close at 10pm for the two referendums and Carlow/Kilkenny by-election, with 3.2 million people eligible to vote.
