Support programme for teachers dealing with bereaved children launched

A new resource to help teachers offer support to children who have been bereaved is being launched today.

The online service called Listen with Eyes, Ears and Heart is the first time a comprehensive database has been put together for Irish educators.

It is a joint initiative from a number of bodies following calls from teachers for help when a child in their class loses a loved one.

Creator Therese Hegarty of the Froebel education department at NUI Maynooth said teachers can feel at a loss when it comes to helping a grieving child.

"They don't quite know what to do - what should I say to the other children? What should I say to parents? Where should I be?

"And there's a preoccupation with 'I don't want to do any harm. People are upset, [and] I don't want to make things worse.

"So it's to give teachers some basic signposts in how they handle bereavement - in the early days, especially."
