Lynch: Under-sixes care may need a supplementary budget

The Junior Health Minister said if a bailout to cover the cost of free GP care for under-sixes is needed before the end of the year then it will be found.

Kathleen Lynch's comments come despite warnings from Cabinet Ministers that no supplementary estimates would be given out this year.

The scheme, which will allow children under six visit the doctor for free, is expected to be in place by July with contracts being issued to GP's in the coming weeks.

Minister Lynch told the Dáil that the €36 million expected to fund the scheme this year will not be taken from other services.

"If there is need for a supplementary budget towards the end f the year, deputy, there will be a supplementary budget," she said in response to a question.

"We are determined that this scheme … will be taken up by everyone to the advantage of every child in the country [and] it will be funded in the way we have proposed."

She said that may mean additional funds are needed in the final months of the year.
