A government minister says the tax system is unfair because county councillors pay PRSI but don't get any benefits.

Kevin Humphreys says councillors who don't take other jobs are left without any benefits when they reach retirement.

All public office holders have had to pay PRSI on their income since 2010 but unlike TDs and Senators, councillors don't get a pension afterwards.

Minister Humphreys told the Seanad that it is an unpopular issue but one that should be looked at.
