The Health Minister Leo Varadkar says there is some scope for pay rises in his sector, but it is limited.

The Health Minister says the Government will have more money to spend in next year's budget and he is in favour of pay restoration in the public sector.

However, he says expectations should be contained because services need increased funding also.

Mr Varadkar said: "I do think we do need some pay restoration. Public servants made some big sacrifices, contributed hugely to the recovery.

"Also in some areas of health, not in others, we are having trouble recruiting because salary scales are less competititve than in other English-speaking countries.

"But, I suppose what we have to do as a Government is try to contain expectations, bear in mind that we need money for services as well as pay increases."
