Portlaoise baby-deaths report an 'opportunity for disclosure', says father of baby who died

Publication of HIQA report into the deaths of five babies at Portlaoise Hospital should happen immediately, and is a "perfect opportunity for disclosure", a father of one of the babies has said.

The HSE today confirmed it considered a court injunction to stop the health watchdog report from being published over concerns it lacked balance and contained factual inaccuracies.

However they say they are now working with HIQA on finalising the investigation.

Earlier today the Health Minister Leo Varadkar warned it was not appropriate for government agencies to sue one another.

Ollie Kelly, whose daughter Mary Kate is one of the babies who died, said all of the facts needed to be made public immediately.

"Minister Varadkar said he is all on for open disclosure. This is the perfect opportunity (for it)," he said.

He said it was needed "to get out there what has happened, get the lessons that need to be learned and get proper procedures in place so this will never happen again".
