A Status Orange snow and ice alert remains in place for Connacht and much of the west of the country, with accumulations of more than 3cm likely in places.

Met Éireann also issued a yellow snow-ice warning for Munster, Dublin and parts of south and east Leinster.

The weather warnings will remain in place until 6pm this evening.

"Connacht, parts of Ulster and parts of the midlands will be most at risk," said Met Éireann forecaster Eoin Sherlock.

"Parts of the south coast probably should be fine, although a few showers might stray down.

He said that eastern coastal counties should avoid the worst of the showers.

"Those showers will tend to snow out on the way over in the midlands," he said.

"So it's really the midlands, parts of the west, and parts of the northwest that are most at risk."
