TUI: Teachers would not give 'whole-hearted support' for current Junior Cert plan

The Teachers Union of Ireland has said teachers would not support the current compromise plan for the Junior Cycle if it was put to a ballot.

School management and parents groups will meet with the Department of Education today to discuss Junior Cert reform.

Last week, officials from teachers unions rejected a compromise plan, put forward by Dr Pauric Travers.

The TUI is appealing for further negotiations on the proposals and the union's President, Gerry Quinn, says they cannot put the current plan to a ballot.

He said: "If we were to ballot our members in that regard, then we wouldn't achieve what Dr Travers himself has pointed out - which is the necessity to have teachers whole-hearted support, is how he describes it for the reforms.

"Otherwise they have very, very little likelihood of a success.

"So in that regard what we need is a situation whereby we can have confidence in a convincing set of propsals that teachers would actually support."
