TUI: Dept 'not able to proceed' with Junior Cert changes

The Teachers Union of Ireland is making a fresh appeal for more talks on Junior Cert reform.

Officials rejected a plan put forward at the end of last week, however school management and other groups are being briefed on the plans at the Department of Education today.

It was put forward by the chairman of the earlier talks process, Dr Pauric Travers, as a compromise document.

President of the Teachers Union of Ireland Gerry Quinn believes the plans cannot go any further in the current climate.

He said: "Further talks will bring about a resolution and we're appealing to the minister to engage with us again.

"Further implementation in any event isn't possible because teachers have agreed not to co-operate with planning for the new changes or training with regard to the new assessment procedures.

"So, the minister is nbot able, or the department is not able to proceed in the way that it may appear."
