Five young men, including a teenager, have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery in a Co Kerry post office this week.

Last Monday afternoon, a group of men wearing boiler suits and balaclavas and brandishing a pistol and a baseball bat entered Tarbert Post Office near Listowel.

They held up two members of staff before making off with a small amount of cash.

This morning detectives accompanied by the Garda Regional Dog Unit took part in searches in the Listowel area.

Three men, all in their twenties, were arrested and taken to Listowel, Tralee and Killarney Garda Stations for questioning.

In a follow up search a fourth man in his twenties was arrested in Listowel and was brought to Killarney Garda Station.

This afternoon in another follow up search a fifth man in his late teens was arrested in Listowel and taken to Ballybunion Garda Station.

All of the men are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be detained for up to three days.
