TDs decide to leave 'Jake's Law' at discretion of local authorities

A Kilkenny woman campaigning to reduce the speed limits in housing estates has had her hopes dashed.

Roseanne Brennan brought forward the bill 'Jake's Law' after her six-year-old son was killed by a car just metres from his home.

The Road Traffic amendment bill was debated in the Dáil this week.

However, yesterday Minister Paschal Donohoe told the family that he will leave the discretion with local authorities to decide speed limits in their catchment areas.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Health, Caoimhin O'Caolain, says this is not good enough, as local authorities have so far failed to reduce speed limits in residential areas.
