Gardaí question man after widow stabbed to death in Dublin; neighbour in hospital

A man in his 30's remains in Garda custody this morning, in connection with the death of a woman in South county Dublin.

The 65-year-old widow, Jane Braidwood, died following a stabbing incident at her home in Dún Laoghaire at teatime last evening.

A neighbour who tried to come to her aid suffered minor injuries.

Gardaí were called to the scene after Ms Braidwood was apparently stabbed in the kitchen of her home at Clarinda Park East in Dun Laoghaire, at around 5pm yesterday evening..

The mother of three, who was originally from Australia, was taken by ambulance to St Vincent's University Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

A man aged in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station.

It is understood the man was known to the victim.

Conor Fehan, chief reporter with the Herald, says the man who was arrested was her son.

Another person, said to be a male neighbour, is believed to have sustained minor injuries when he tried to come to the woman's aid, after her daughter ran onto the street screaming.

The suspect is believed to have attacked the neighbour, and he is currently being treated in hospital.

A post mortem will take place to determine the exact cause of death.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
