Temperatures are expected to drop to as low as -5 degrees celcius overnight in the South of the country and Midlands.

Met Eireann has issued a yellow weather alert for all of Ireland which will remain in place until tomorrow morning at 10am.

A widespread severe frost will develop in most places.

Forecaster David Rogers says the north of the country may escape the worst of the cold front;

AA Roadwatch have the following advice:

Motorists are advised to slow down, take extra care and remember stopping distances are ten times longer in snow and ice. Allow plenty of extra time to complete your journey safely. Use fog lights when needed but switch them off when no longer necessary.
