Govt gives Councils funding for 1916 commemoration

Local authorities are receiving one million euro in funding towards the commemoration of the 1916 rising.

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht - Heather Humphreys - announced the money, in preparation for the centenary.

There will be a series of formal events, but the Minister for Arts and Heritage says she wants schools, history groups, arts and sporting organisations to get involved at a local level.

The various City and County Councils will receive the funding to allow them to develop plans in their own counties throughout the year, so they're ready to go in 2016.
