Eight hospitalised after chemical leak in Swords plant

Eight people were taken to hospital this morning following a chemical spill at the Bristol-Meyers Squibb plant in Swords, Co. Dublin.

It is understood the spill happened at approximately 3.30am this morning on the production site, which was closed for the remainder of the day.

In a statement this evening, the company confirmed "a small localised chemical leak from a manufacturing vessel".

"Eight people presented with reactionary symptoms presented and subsequently attended Beaumount Hospital where, as a precautionary safeguard, all are being retained at present for observation," they said.

It said no other staff are at risk as a result of the leak.

It is understood the leak involved a "reaction solution" - a solvent mixed with water.

A spokesperson for the company said the incident was "quite localised to a small area" and was dealt with by the company's own emergency response team, without involving the fire services or gardaí.

A full investigation is under way.

The Health and Safety Authority confirmed this evening that they had been notified by the company about "a dangerous occurrence."

The production area of the plant remained closed for the rest of the day.
