Two victims of Athy crash laid to rest

The funerals have taken place in Carlow of two of the victims of Tuesday’s road crash in Kildare.

Chermaine Carroll and Gemma Nolan have been laid to rest this afternoon.

Father Tom Little, the chief celebrant at the two funerals today, said: "on Tuesday last, our parish was plunged into a n unbelievable darkness, sadness, and disbelief".

Chermaine Carroll was the first of the four victims of Tuesday’s crash to be laid to rest – and hundreds gathered at St Mary’s Church in Bennekerry this morning. The 20 year old was remembered as beautiful, gentle and creative.

Later this afternoon, around a thousand mourners gathered at Askea church to pay tribute to Gemma Nolan – a girl who loved music.

There were sad scenes during the prayers of the faithful – where survivor Dayna, was remembered.

The funerals of the other two victims, Niamh Doyle and Ashling Middleton, will take place tomorrow.
