Potential perjury trial 'could halt Drumm extradition'

Attempts to extradite former Anglo chief David Drumm could be hindered by a potential perjury prosecution in the US.

It is understood that diplomatic moves are underway to have Mr Drumm returned to Ireland to face criminal charges after his bid to be declared bankrupt in the US failed..

Yesterday, it emerged David Drumm was accused of telling "outright lies" in court by a US judge.

Boston lawyer and law lecturer at NUI Galway Larry Donnelly says Drumm could be prosecuted for perjury which would take precedence over extradition.

"In essence, this judge called Mr Drumm a liar, over and over again," he said.

"It's clear to me from reading the opinion that the judge is actually really angry with Drumm and this is just not language that typically appears in traditional opinion.

"So, while prosecutions for perjury are rare, this opinion would seem to leave the door open in that regard."
