Weather warning in place as motorists urged to drive carefully

A weather warning remains in place across the country this morning.

The yellow alert was issued after temperatures dropped to as low as -4C in places overnight.

The warning is in effect until midday today, with Met Éireann advising caution with widespread frosty conditions.

“You have to make sure you slow down and allow plenty of extra time to reach your destination,” said Noel Byrne from AA Roadwatch.

“Bear in mind that stopping distances are 10 times longer when driving in ice and snow.

“You’re also advised to stick to main routes are they are more likely to have been gritted than secondary roads.”

Met Éireann, forecaster Joanna Donnelly has warned of some wintry showers.

"They'll be continuing right through the day, becoming quite frequent later in the day towards tomorrow evening but most of the country will dry,

"[It will be] mostly northwestern and western coastal areas that will be affected by the wintry showers."
