The President of China Xi Jinping has accepted an invitation to visit Ireland.

The President of China Xi Jinping has accepted an invitation to visit Ireland.

At a meeting in the Great Hall of the People this morning President Michael D. Higgins extended the invite to Xi Jinping, who previously travelled here in 2012 before he became president.

Afterwards a Chinese spokesperson told waiting reporters that both presidents had reached agreement on a number of issues including trade, education and areas of international relations.

A timeframe for the visit is yet to be set.
