Flood risk for Munster and Leinster as new weather warning issued

Met Éireann has this afternoon issued a Status-Orange weather alert for Munster and Leinster.

The alert, issued at 2pm today, warns of "thundery downpours in places for the rest of Thursday".

It has also warned of "Another spell of very heavy rain overnight and Friday morning with ongoing risk of flooding.", with rainfall totals of 40-60mm "likely".

The warning is valid until midday tomorrow at least.

There is also a less serious (Status Yellow) rainfall warning in effect for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal, also issued at 2pm today.

It has warned of "heavy rain at times through Thursday and early Friday", with "rainfall totals of 25 – 40 mm possible".

There was also a Status Yellow wind warning issued for all of Ireland, predicating "strong to gale force winds, with mean speed of 45 – 60 km/h gusting 90 – 100 km/h, strongest in the east and northeast".

At least some have managed to see the positive site, with the organisers of the Cork Film Festival tweeting that the rain provides "ideal weather for movie watching".

Siobhan Ryan from Met Éireann says conditions will improve for time, but the weather will deteriorate again overnight.

"Clearence has already set in across the west and south west of the country - and there will be a lot of dry weather developing this evening and for a time early tonight" she said.

"But we're looking at another spell of very wet and very windy weather moving up from the south later tonight and for a time tomorrow.

"So certainly not out of the woods by any means (with) spot flooding, impaired viability, and a lot of surface water around".

"So very treacherous conditions if you are out and about unfortunatly."
