The pair, who had been kayaking on the river at Gearhameen, become stranded on an island when they lost their paddles yesterday evening at around 7.30pm.

Valentia Coastguard were contacted at approximately 9pm last night, but due to dangerous weather conditions, they were unable to deploy a chopper. However, Killarney Lake Rescue were able to deploy a tent and overnight supplies to the pair who spent the night on the island.

The Shannon Search and Rescue Helicopter reached the man and the woman shortly after eight-thirty this morning.
