Weather warnings in effect tonight with strong winds and heavy rain

Ireland is facing into some heavy rain tonight as Ireland experiences the tail end of Hurricance Gonzalo.

The storm has already severely damaged buildings and caused powercuts in Bermuda, and Met Éireann has issued an orange and yellow weather alert for different parts of the country.

A wind warning is in place for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo with strong to gale force winds with gusts of 90 to 110 kilometres per hour forecast.

Met Éireann said it will be very wet and windy tonight, with south-westerly gales veering to the north-west. It is expected that heavy rain will clear up to ordinary showers later in the night.

ESB Networks advised customers that the loss of power supply is possible overnight, and warned customers not to approach any fallen cables or poles.

P & O Ferries is warning passengers that sailings between Larne and Cairnryan will be suspended overnight due to the adverse weather.

The company said services will not be operating on the route from Northern Ireland to Scotland from 2am tomorrow morning until further notice.
