Gardaí at Ballymun are investigating a taxi hijacking which occurred shortly after 2.30am this morning.

Two men were being taken by taxi from O’Connell St in Dublin city centre to Ballymun.

As the taxi entered Ballymun, the rear-seat passenger threatened the taxi driver with a knife and ordered the driver out of the vehicle.

A small amount of cash was stolen.

The taxi driver alerted Gardaí and following a search of the area the taxi was located on the Old Airport Road close to Ballymun.

Two men were subsequently arrested nearby in connection with this incident and are currently detained at Mountjoy Garda Station under Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984 .

The male taxi driver was uninjured.
