Adams: Gaeltacht gone in 30 years if Government does not act

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has said the Irish Government must act fast or the Gaeltacht will cease to exist.

He was speaking at today's Sinn Féin Slógadh (the party's annual celebration of the Irish language) in Derry.

Mr Adams said experts insisted the Gaeltacht would cease to exist within 30 years if action is not taken now.

He went on to praise the work of the former language commissioner Seán Ó Cuirreáin and promised Sinn Féin's support to his successor Rónan Ó Domhnaill, adding the Irish Language Commissioner was forced to leave his post due to the Government's inaction.
