Over 200 Irish citizens in Ebola risk areas, TDs told

It's emerged that at least 200 Irish citizens are currently in areas at a high risk from the Ebola outbreak.

There are 215 citizens living in outbreak areas in West Africa, the majority of which are in the Nigerian capital, Lagos.

The details have emerged at the Oireachtas foreign affairs committee, which is discussing Ireland's role in responding to the crisis.

Experts have told the Oireachtas foreign affairs committee that the disease can be treated if doctors have the proper facilities.

Dr Gabriel Fitzpatrick from Medicins Sans Frontieres, which is treating patients on the ground, says the disease can be stopped, but only with the proper resources.

"With each day that passes, the outbreak grows in size and complexity," he said. "Western governments have been preoccupied with preventing an Ebola case from entering their territory.

"While this is understandable, it does not negate their responsibility to assist with this public health emergency of international concern."
