Minister brings in three new terror offences under new Bill

Three new terror offences have been created as part of a new Bill published by the Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald.

Under the Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) Bill, it will be an offence to train and recruit for terrorism as well as to publicly provoke someone to commit a terrorist offence.

The offences carry a maximum sentence of ten years on conviction, and or a €5000 fine.

Minister Fitzgerald said the bill is an "important milestone" towards bringing in EU laws on combating terrorism.

It also lays the groundwork for Ireland's ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism.
