Greyhound Group welcomes government move on pay rates

Greyhound Group says it welcomes the decision by Minister of State, Ged Nash, to seek the introduction of legally binding pay rates for bin workers across the waste industry.

The company says it has been seeking an initiative like this for some time.

At the core of the present dispute at Greyhound are pay rates 60% above the industry average. Greyhound collection crews are the best paid bin collectors in Europe.

The company is also defending its pay rates, saying even after the proposed reduction, they will still be 10% above the industry average.

Greyhound says it must be allowed to compete, on a level playing field, with other waste companies and binding pay rates across the industry would allow it to achieve this.

SIPTU workers at Greyhound have been picketing outside the plant in Dublin's Clondalkin since mid-June, in protest at planned pay cuts.
