Sailors rescued from Cork Harbour

Two men in their 50s were rescued from Cork Harbour this evening after their sailing boat capsized.

The alarm was raised shortly after 6pm when the Naval Service vessel LÉ Niamh, which was on patrol in the area, received a distress call.

The Naval Service immediately dispatched a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) to the scene, to the east of the harbour near East Ferry, where they found the two men on the upturned hull of their boat.

The boat was towed in by the Crosshaven lifeboat and the sailors were transported to the medical centre in the Naval Base, Haulbowline by RIB where they were examined by the duty paramedic.

As they were found to be medically fine, they were then transported by the Naval Service to Ringaskiddy.

The two men are from the Cork area and were reported to be in good spirits despite the incident.
