Midlands North-West European election set for morning recount

A full recount will take place 10am in the morning in the Midlands North-West European constituency following the announcement of the count eight in Castlebar just before midnight.

There were just 275 votes separating Independent Marian Harkin and Fianna Fáil’s Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher from obtaining the last seat in Europe.

The announcement was made following the surplus of Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy's votes after he was elected on count seven.

Independent Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan and Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness were previously declared elected during the three day count process
