Luke Flanagan elected MEP in Midlands NW

Luke 'Ming' Flanagan has passed the quota and been elected an MEP in the Midlands Northwest constituency.

The sitting TD passed the quota of 129,290 to secure a seat. Labour's Lorraine Higgins has been eliminated, and her votes will be distributed. Flanagan's small surplus of 271 votes will also be redistributed.

Currently, Sinn Fein's Matt Carthy sits close to the quota (114,727) and is expected to be elected, with Mairead McGuinness in third (92,080), while a battle lies ahead between Pat the Cope Gallagher and Marian Harkin.

Flanagan's election will result in a by-election for his Dáil seat in the constituency of Roscommon-South Leitrim.
