Man charged with murdering homeless man at squat in Dublin

A Polish man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a squatter in the Dublin city centre.

The victim, a Polish man in his 40s, was stabbed to death inside a disused pub on North Wall Quay two nights ago.

On Wednesday night, Jacek Kozakiewicz was found dead on the third floor of the old Vallence and McGrath pub just a short walk from the O2 arena.

It is believed the 44-year-old had been seeking shelter there with a group of homeless people.

A murder inquiry was launched last night following the results of a post mortem by the State Pathologist.

Andrzej Wawrzyniak, a Polish man of no fixed abode, appeared in court today wearing a black Fleetwood Mac t-shirt and navy tracksuit bottoms.

Sergeant John Brady of Store Street Garda Station said he was charged with murder just after 11.30pm last night and made no reply after he was cautioned.

The 33-year-old did not speak during today's short court appearance and Judge Patricia McNamara was told he did not need an interpreter at this stage of proceedings.

Following a request from his solicitor, Judge McNamara made an order for him to be provided with any medical attention while in custody.

There was no objection to legal aid and Mr Wawrzyniak was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court this day week.
