Mount Carmel Hospital to close

The High Court has appointed provisional liquidators who propose a gradual wind up of the private hospital in South Dublin in order to protect its 230 patients.

Mount Carmel’s 230 patients are being assured they will be cared for at the hospital.

But as of today no more elective procedures will be carried out and obstetric patients will be transferred to other maternity hospitals.

The High Court has agreed to appoint provisional liquidators to the hospital, which in recent years has been dependent on the financial support of NAMA.

The hospital is now completely insolvent with debts of over €39m. The hospital’s 328 full and part time staff will also be affected.

The court heard without this intervention the hospital would not have been in a position to continue its operations past Monday.
