The Irish Medical Organisation has expressed its grave concern over the closure of the Acute Medical Assessment Unit at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick to new referrals.

The IMO said the hospital told GPs in the region this week that the unit has no room for seriously ill patients due to a surge in patients at the Emergency Department since Christmas.
