100 kids set to receive cochlear implants, but some will miss out

Around 100 children with hearing difficulties will be given cochlear implants in each ear from next year.

The HSE's service plan includes €3.2m to allow children have the implants in both ears instead of just one.

Around 300 children are on waiting lists for the treatment, which is only effective if carried out while the child is very young.

HSE director-general Tony O'Brien has said the funding won't be able to cater to all of those children.
