Phoenix Park body 'too badly burned to identify'

Gardaí are today appealing for the public's help in identifying a man who died in a fire in Dublin.

The homeless man's body was found in a burnt out sleeping bag near the Wellington Monument in the Phoenix Park at around 1am this morning.

The State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is continuing a post mortem examination this evening to determine his exact cause of death.

The incident is currently being treated as suspicious, but the results of the post mortem will decide what direction the case takes.

Garda spokesperson Superintendent David Taylor said the man suffered extensive injuries in the blaze.

"Unfortunately, due to the extensive nature of the fire, visual identification is nor possible," he said.

"We're unable at this stage to provide any personal details, and that is the nature of our appeal here tonight.

"We're appealing for people to come forward. It could be your friend, it could be your neighbour, it could be a relative of yours that you haven't seen in the last 24 hours."
