Injuries to Temple Bar attack victim 'severe but not life-threatening'

Detectives have launched an investigation after a man was brutally attacked and left collapsed on a street in Dublin city centre, covered in blood.

The 41-year-old victim was viciously assaulted as he was walking through Fishamble Street at the edge of the Temple Bar district in the early hours of the morning.

Investigating gardaí called to the scene shortly after 2am described the man’s injuries as severe but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

The man’s wallet was taken during the attack. It is believed he was on his way home after work when he was set upon.

When emergency services arrived at the scene – close to Christchurch Cathedral - the victim was taken to St James’s Hospital.

He is being treated for a number of facial fractures, including injuries to his eye.

“It was a particularly severe attack,” said a Garda spokesman.

The area has been sealed off. Forensic experts from the Garda Technical Bureau have been examining the area for evidence.

The Garda spokesman confirmed the force is investigating a serious assault in the area.
