Murder inquiry expected in Skerries grandfather stabbing

Gardaí are expected to launch a murder inquiry following the fatal stabbing of a grandfather in Dublin.

55-year-old Michael Gannon was babysitting his two grandchildren aged 12 and six at their home in Skerries when he was attacked.

The incident happened at around 6pm yesterday evening.

The State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, is currently conducting a post mortem examination to determine his exact cause of death.

A 29-year-old Romanian man, who was arrested nearby shortly after the incident, is still being questioned by Gardai.

Ciaran Byrne, a Labour Party Councillor in Skerries, says there is a lot of shock in the area.

"Obviously the fact that there were young children in the vicinity is an added tragedy," he said.

"He was a very nice chap."
