Mayo woman survives attack with hammer in Haitian orphanage
An Irish woman working in a Haitian orphanage has survived a hammer attack, during a violent robbery in which another member of staff was killed.
Gena Heraty was struck a number of times during the attack, at the home for children with special needs, near Port-au-Prince.
The Mayo native, who had already been punched and beaten, was in a nearby bedroom protecting a number of children when the thieves killed the night watchman before fleeing the scene.
