Revenue chairwoman to explain Property Tax measures to Oireachtas Committee

Concerns over payment options for the 2014 property tax will be discussed during a special meeting today.

The chairwoman of the Revenue Commissioners Josephine Feehily is due to attend an Oireachtas Committee to clarify a number of issues.

Yesterday, the Revenue extended the original deadline for people to make their postal returns for next year's tax.

The Chairman of the Finance Committee, Deputy Ciaran Lynch, said that Ms Feehily will be asked to explain to TDs why some people will end up paying next year's property tax in 2013.

"The issue with regard to direct debits or credit cards seems to imply that if people actually state that they're going to intend to do this, that the deduction will be made off their credit card and direct debit by the end of November," he said.

"There's two concerns arising out of that.

"One is that the payments then would be made before the payment is actually due, and given that almost a million people actually paid the local property tax earlier this year, for the six-month period through this method, it would mean that there's an issue of customer services as well."
