Taoiseach and Tánaiste raised concerns about US surveillance

It has emerged this evening that the Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister raised concerns about the possible bugging of phones and emails in Ireland by the US as early as last July.

Officials acting on Eamon Gilmore's behalf made contact with the US Embassy in Dublin about possible spying.

It is unclear what, if any response was received to the raising of the issue.

Last week, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said he had not raised the issue with America, but stated to reporters twice that he operated on the basis that someone was listening on his phone.
