Clare man the first Irish man to win Dublin City Marathon in 20 years

Clare man Hehir came home in a time of 2:18:19, just over a minute clear of Dundrum South Dublin’s Joe Sweeney.

“To win today, I’ve been in Dublin over 10 years, since I moved here for college, this is my home from home I am so proud to win it”. Said Hehir

Hehir and Sweeney engaged in a battle for the first 20 miles of the race, with Hehir reigning Sweeney back in at the 20 mile mark.

“I got a bit carried away with myself” said second place Sweeney. “I lost a bit of momentum of two or three kilometers, I started to paid for it just after 20 miles.

Moldovan international Sergui Ciobanu was third in 2:22:02. Cionbanu is based in Waterford and is the reigning Irish cross country champion.

Dubliner Maria McCambridge took the women’s tile in 2:38:51, the first Irish winner since Sonia O’Sullivan in 2000.

“I am so happy to win my home town marathon” said McCambridge afterward.

38-year-old mother of one McCambridge was locked in a tussle with Cork’s Clare McCarthy, with McCarthy edging out into the lead with four miles remaining.

“I had to take pit stop around 18 miles” revealed McCambridge. “My legs just started to go on me. I just had to run through it, it was big battle, but I’m very proud to win Dublin.”

2008 Bejing Olympian Pauline Curley from Tullamore took third place.

Update at 15.00pm

A man is being treated in hospital after it is believed he collapsed during today's Dublin Marathon.

It is understood the man - who is thought to be in his late 20's - was treated at the scene before been removed to hospital.

The extent of his condition is not yet known.

There are no further details at this stage.
