The minimum unit pricing is among a number of measures announced by the Department of Health to get people to cut down on the amount they drink.

Health warnings and advice will be on all bottles and cans, while the advertising of alcoholic products will be limited on television, radio, print and outdoor media as well as in cinemas.

Health Minister Dr James Reilly said Ireland has a problem with alcohol.

“Alcohol misuse in Ireland is a serious problem with 2000 of our hospitals beds occupied each night by people with alcohol related illness or injury.

“This impacts on families and individuals at every level of society.”

There will also be restrictions on the advertising of alcohol on TV and radio from 2016 to evening hours.
