A man found unconscious on a street in Cork city has died from his injuries.

He was being treated at Cork University Hospital, but he died early this morning.

The 36-year-old, from Carpenterstown in Dublin, was found collapsed on St Patrick's Quay in Cork city around 10.30pm on Thursday night.

He was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a head injury, but he died early this morning.

A post mortem is now being carried out on the man's body as Gardaí investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Gardaí say the findings of the post mortem will determine the direction of their investigation.
