The ASTI is warning the Government that it may escalate its industrial action and go on strike if the Government does not re-enter into talks.

Up to 17,000 secondary school teachers began a work-to-rule today after they rejected the Haddington Road Agreement on Public Sector pay.

Teachers who are members of the secondary school teacher's union are refusing to attend meetings and events outside of school hours, or take on extra duties.

There are fears this could affect the new Junior Cert. Cycle.

Spokesperson for the National Parents Council Jackie O'Callaghan said the dispute is causing unnecessary stress for parents and pupils.

She said: "Particularly for full exam students, they are at full belt now until June. That's what's in their head now, it's in their face and it's what they talk about.

"You have CAO application evenings coming up now which are very important for parents, so that's a huge disruption if those are not going to be held for parents.
